The other item from D our Roving Reporter in Central Victoria is about the death of Jan Senbergs (1939-2024) posted on the Instagram page for the Bendigo Art Gallery.

Vale Jan Senbergs
Bendigo Art Gallery acknowledges the passing of Jan Senbergs (1939-2024).

The Gallery has significant holdings of Senbergs’ work and several important paintings acquired through the generous recent gift of The Honourable Paul Guest OAM QC, who has enjoyed a decades-long friendship with the artist.

Born in Latvia in 1939, Jan Senbergs migrated with his family to Australia at the age of ten and settled in Melbourne. He formally studied commercial screen-printing however regarded himself as a self-taught artist whose early association with Leonard French was formative, as were subsequent friendships with artists George Johnson and Roger Kemp.

Jan Senbergs was renowned for his dense, expressive views of cities and industrial landscapes as both poignant and humorous observations of the trappings of civilisation. Working deftly across printmaking, drawing and painting with the use of a distinctive black line and dramatic palette, Senbergs’ work gave rise to the icons of industry; his painterly, masculine works drawing both from observation and the artist’s vast imagination.

We extend our deepest condolences to Jan's family and friends.

Here are some examples of Jan Senbergs' amazing paintings and drawings. You will find his works in many of the Australian galleries including at the Bendigo Art Gallery if you are lucky enough to be able to visit.
